Actually, I sleep more now than I used to. Medication has helped me tremendously in that area, as in many others.

I can't point to a particular time that's BEST...

But he's made it that much more difficult for himself, when NOT choosing that route would be FAR more simple, in terms of getting everyone on his side of the ideological divide to support him.

Instead, he thinks doing THIS will win him more "moderate" votes.

Maybe he's right.

In Newsom's case, I also believe he's a canny opportunist. Charismatic as hell... but opportunistic as hell.

He's done HIS political calculus, and the answer HE'S come up with is... trans rights are expendable.

He believes he can win the Presidency without people who care about this issue.
