I’ve been waiting for Starmer to do this for years. But every time it’s the same perceived-Reform-voter-pleasing timidity. Thing is, doggedly sticking to these Brexit-sympathising positions actually helps to reinforce them as the majority view. He needs to lead.

The French government might be the anti Trump, however the RN clearly has no shortage of support among the French electorate. Sadly.

Like he played the long game with Brexit?
March 27, 2025 at 10:02 AM
I suspect this will prove unpopular with European electorates and further strengthen the insidious far right
March 27, 2025 at 10:02 AM
Farage, basically
March 27, 2025 at 9:57 AM
Canada knows this, Germany knows this, France knows this.
March 26, 2025 at 8:08 PM
The US will boost and amplify the far right anyway. What makes you think appeasement will change this?
March 26, 2025 at 8:08 PM
Well not if Reform UK merges with the Conservative Party. There are enough people in this country who believe Sadiq Khan is running a caliphate in London to ensure faith in Brexit will continue for the foreseeable future?
March 18, 2025 at 10:44 AM
Exactly - how Starmer attempts to handle Trump won’t make any difference.
March 6, 2025 at 9:57 AM
We can only hope he is. But if/when tarrifs come our way, I’d hope to see a bit more of a Trudeau-like response from him.
March 5, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Absolutely, he has little leverage and needs to pay more attention to what JD Vance and Elon Musk are telling us about how they see the UK and Europe. They’ll ultimately treat us with the same contempt as they’ve treated Ukraine and Canada.
March 5, 2025 at 1:29 PM
I hope this is the case and that Starmer isn’t doing a Neville Chamberlain.
March 5, 2025 at 11:25 AM
We’ve got to ask ourselves why, for example, JD Vance keeps making swipes at the UK. I think we should pay closer attention to what they’re telling us.
March 5, 2025 at 11:24 AM
Is the effort essentially necessary theatre, or is it naivety?
March 5, 2025 at 10:43 AM
But is it in the interests of the UK when it’s unlikely that Trump will act in good faith?
March 5, 2025 at 10:41 AM
No
March 5, 2025 at 10:33 AM
I’m from UK and over here we just can’t believe what’s happening in the USA. What are the chances of popular protest gaining traction and working?
March 4, 2025 at 11:14 PM
So why hasn’t Starmer been listening?
March 4, 2025 at 11:11 AM
If any casual observer could see this coming, it’s hard to imagine that Starmer and European leaders couldn’t?
March 4, 2025 at 9:33 AM
March 3, 2025 at 9:26 AM
Given MAGA’s current state of mind, do you feel convinced it will be receptive to such diplomacy?Or will Starmer’s and Europe’s efforts be treated with a similar contempt to that shown to Zelensky. We know where Vance’s and Musk’s European political sympathies lie.
March 2, 2025 at 1:37 PM
Slow to realise that the US are liable to show similar contempt to this as they did to Zelensky during his visit to Washington.
March 2, 2025 at 1:27 PM
I can only hope this is the case.
March 1, 2025 at 10:07 AM
There’s a difference between attacking Starmer and suggesting he should take a line more in step with the EU, Canada and most other western democracies.
