Science is political. It wouldn't necessarily have to be partisan.

But when one party is opposed to science-based policy, scientists have a choice between saying "you're right, thoughts and prayers are probably as effective as reducing carbon emissions" or saying "fuck that."

This argument is from Michael Sandel's book against meritocracy. 📚 A must-read!

For non-Spanish speakers, the chart shows how many flats you could purchase with the Spanish national lottery over the years. As Sandel puts it, how fair is the year in which you are born as a measure of your "merits"?

A nice way of visualizing that there's always a numerical error when using a computer due to the finite value of bits that we use to represent each number. Here I plot sin(x*y)**2+cos(x*y)**2, which is 1. But python obtains slightly different values: blue=1.0, red=1+2e-16.

SPACE FACTS: DAY 239/365🧪🛰🔭

Fusion in stars ends with silicon burning because the products of silicon burning, primarily nickel and iron, can no longer gain energy by combining them with one another! You can see this on the binding energy curve (+ why we get energy from fission of heavier nuclei).

I am not really into posting on social media... That's why I have created a personal website that I will use as a blog, mainly for academic purposes (and with some personal stories). Feel free to look around, any advice is welcome!
