Why would anyone even want this? How does an ER only hospital serve the community? Great, you can get emergency care, but what if you just need an ultrasound, or planned surgery?

Cratchit has a white-collar job and through his connections is able to arrange a white-collar apprenticeship for his son. He's definitely poor but not destitute.
matt.stocum.us
This is one of those great posts where they're both wrong. Cratchit is not supposed to be destitute and doing a simple inflation calculation on his wages is not a fair comparison. There are other characters in the story who are far worse off than Cratchit.

Bob literally gets a single paid vacation day per year:

"And yet," said Scrooge, "you don't think me ill-used, when I pay a day's wages for no work."

The clerk observed that it was only once a year.

Republican Senators, with an assist from Sen. John Fetterman, voted down an attempt to block the Trump administration’s missile strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats. interc.pt/4o9CBur
A photo of Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., sits on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on Oct. 1, 2025, in Washington, overlaid with the headline, "Fetterman Is Sole Democrat to Vote Against Blocking Caribbean Drug Boat Attacks," and the DEK, "It was the first time members of Congress were put on record about whether they supported or opposed the president’s war in the Caribbean."

Obama should not have received a Nobel Peace Prize, and Trump absolutely should not.
ddiamond.bsky.social
Trump’s desire for a Nobel Peace Prize has shaken up global diplomacy, as allies try to curry favor.

It may have even helped spur this week’s Hamas-Israel deal, one former Israeli negotiator said — a bid to help Trump cinch the Nobel before tomorrow’s announcement.

Trump wants a Nobel Prize. He’ll learn Friday if his campaign paid off.
President Donald Trump’s long quest for a Nobel Peace Prize has sparked an unusual global scramble.

Right? “MTG is making a good point.” Not something I EVER thought I’d say.

They’re absolutely awful people, but what Trump is doing is wrong. No one, not even these assholes, should be the subject of a political prosecution to calm the ego of a manbaby.

The greatest crime Trump has committed is making me support Bolton and Comey.

WSJ reports that DOJ is going to charge John Bolton.

In case you needed anyone less sympathetic to rally behind than Jim Comey.

Prosecutors in Maryland are expected in coming days to charge one of Trump’s first-term national security advisers, John Bolton, now a top Trump critic, with mishandling classified information, according to people familiar with the matter.

This is what every Democratic state needs to do, tell its state university leaders that they will lose all state appropriations if they sign the compact. Take the decision out of feckless college administrators’ hands.
mkirschenbaum.bsky.social
Virginia State Senate Dems just brought down fire and fury regarding the “Compact,” notifying the President and Rector that UVA would lose ALL STATE APPROPRIATIONS if it signs and cedes the University to “federal political control.” Notably, their letter directly restates points made here by @siva.
sivav.bsky.social
The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.

The Speaker of the House has firm views that Bad Bunny is a terrible pick for singing at the Super Bowl, but hasn't had time to watch the President's speech to our military leadership or form an opinion whether furloughed federal workers should be paid or Illinois' governor should be thrown in jail.

Keeping the tariff exemptions would be my guess.

I don’t get how any EV doesn’t have a heat pump. You already have 99% of the components, just go the rest of the way.

I really looked at the PHEV Pacifica, but some of the reliability stories concerned me, and I really loved the interior of the Odyssey, specifically how much cargo space it has when you take the seats out. It was really close though.
matt.stocum.us
That's a shame about the Buzz. I didn't research it too much, as it wasn't available when we were in the market. Really it came down to the Pacifica PHEV or the Odyssey for us, as the Sienna was absurdly overpriced due to limited stock. One place wanted $30k over MSRP for a 3-year-old Sienna.
matt.stocum.us
If Honda had an EV version of the Odyssey, I'd definitely consider it. I still like the concept of the PHEV as waiting 30 minutes or whatever for fast charging with kids on a road trip gives me severe range anxiety.
matt.stocum.us
Part of it is there is a single EV minivan on the market in the US. I also really love the interior of the Odyssey. I can comfortably fit an adult in the second row between a car seat and a booster. If I take the 2nd row seats out, I can fit full plywood sheets with the trunk closed.
matt.stocum.us
While I don't disagree with your concerns, they're hardly exclusive to Chinese companies. American car makers are more than happy to sell your driving data to the highest bidder.
matt.stocum.us
Toyota at least went all in with hybrids for the Sienna, unfortunately they had an early 80s video game programmer design the inside of the van. The Odyssey is the last minivan on the market without at least a hybrid option. It's pretty mind boggling.

I love how almost the entirety of New York state is "upstate," which quite frankly fits with how everyone I know refers to "upstate New York."

This is the most accurate depiction of the Midwest to date. Wichita has always felt like the last Midwest city while also being the first plains city.

If you don’t have a driveway or garage, it can be extremely difficult to have a home charger. For a lot of people living in cities or apartments it’s just not an option.
matt.stocum.us
I’m desperately waiting for Honda to make a plug-in hybrid version of the Odyssey. 95% of my driving is trips less than 5 miles, the other 5% is 80+ miles. Most of my driving could easily be handled by a standard 15 amp 120volt outlet with overnight charging.
