Right. Saudi Arabia is rich as hell... but also, I'm struggling to think of when a consumer boycot of a region rather than a company has driven change?

There could be really good examples but I don't know of any.

So to me, it kinda sucks that 90% of the comedians that went are shitty socially regressive types themselves. If some of the more progressive folks who turned it down went, they could have returned home with money and new fans and put both things to good use. Creating a net good.

And like, I certainly get the argument about how the fees are "blood money" and accepting censorship restrictions is moral compromise... but then those comedians go home and they can put that money towards good causes (most won't, tbf) and go back to their normal material (mostly also bad, tbf)

And, again, isolating a culture due to its regressive social and political attitudes has never once in history led to those sociopolitical attitudes becoming more progressive.

I'm not saying this happens overnight, but it will likely never happen if bridges aren't crossed...

Bringing in comedians - even under censorship restrictions - would open Saudi Arabia up to a broader cultural landscape. It could be a longer-term gateway to exposing Saudi citizens to new social attitudes and realities. Thus, driving social change in the region.

In past eras when the US was committing major human rights atrocities on its own population (or even now) comedians didn't stop performing... comedy and the arts were major social forces that drove change over years and decades.
