From Saturday: filming some footage for a new movie. Again taking an improvisational approach. Footage inspires ideas, which in turn inspire more footage as the structure begins to take form. Interested in observing details, employing different approaches and letting this shape the film.

Still image from SURVEILLANCE FILM (2025, 104 mins.)
Took some visual inspiration for this shot from Murnau's sparse, haunting shots of the forest printed in negative form in "Nosferatu" (1922).

"Surveillance Film" is out now on YouTube to watch for free (currently at 140 views).
I will be releasing my 10th feature "The Mysterious Cinema of Armand St. Pierre" free on YouTube later this year. Making both of these back-to-back created an interesting contrast in the tone each one took.

The inspiration for making "Surveillance Film" was coming across a $20 camcorder at a bargain outlet store. The image it produced made me think of low-res surveillance video. It inspired the idea of a filmmaker hired to shoot surveillance footage for an unknown purpose.

We had a fun Silent Movie Day film screening today at Beyond the Frame, starting with Charlie Chaplin's "The Adventurer" (1917) followed by Harold Lloyd's "The Kid Brother" (1927), both on 16mm prints from the Pratt film collection.

Excited to be screening Harold Lloyd's "The Kid Brother" on 16mm for Silent Movie Day today at Beyond the Frame. This has been my favorite of Lloyd's films since I first saw it exactly 30 years ago this month.

Frame from "Panorama of Eiffel Tower", filmed by James H. White for the Edison Co. in 1900. One of the many inventive films of this early cinema pioneer. Recorded a new improv experimental score for this one tonight that will be available on YouTube soon.
