Why study the brain? We asked students, professors and administrators at our institute. Their response: understanding this extraordinary organ is key to understanding ourselves, tackling devastating diseases like Alzheimer’s and building a better future for us all.

This just dropped in my inbox, which means the new issue of SftP magazine is officially out! 🤩

I was particularly excited about this issue on Rethinking #SciComm, and it was my honor to serve as art director, and 'commission myself' (i.e. volunteer) for the cover #SciArt ❤️
Science for the People
Rethinking Science Communication

Cover by Matteo Farinella

A busy scene of people and scientists interacting in different ways, around an 'ivory tower' representing academia.
matteofarinella.bsky.social
"Instead of a belief in an all-knowing science, we are faced with the reality that humans are responsible for what is researched, how it is researched and what conclusions are drawn from such research."

Scientists: please read this article by Sig Giordano! 🙏

Scientific objectivity is a myth – cultural values and beliefs always influence science and the people who do it
Cultural ideas are inextricably entwined with the people who do science, the questions they ask, the assumptions they hold and the conclusions they land on.

A whole found family of anthropomorphic animals embraces (ft. a coati, cat, fox, rabbit, markhor, poodle, and pygmy hippo)

Text:
"In tackling what's a tense and difficult topic for many people, Mariah-Rose's adorable and expressive drawings make every page overflow with joy, compassion and playfulness. This book reframes relationships around the infinite beautiful possibilities they bring—to build the life, love, and world that we want to see."

—Sarah Shay Mirk, Sex from Scratch: Making Your Own Relationship Rules The same cat enters a community center with a tray of steaming empanadas. An anthropomorphic shark, moth, and panda are all excited about it.

Text:
“Following the great tradition of wise animals, every character in Healthy Relationships has something important to teach us about human relationships. I want to recommend this book to everyone I know - family, friends, neighbors, colleagues - so we can build a better community together.”
– Dr. Matteo Farinella (Neuroscience Ph.D), author & artist of Neurocomic, The Senses, Cervellopoli an anthropomorphoc poodle girl strikes a pose, grinning. she's got waist beads, an afro pick, and a crop-top from no name's book club ft. an AK-47 made out of colorful books. text:

"Made with kindness, compassion and a dash of humor throughout, Mariah-Rose Marie has beautifully illustrated a must-read for anyone who has ever felt lost when navigating relationships, and not just the romantic ones. It’s rare to find a relationship resource so thoughtfully crafted, approachable and empathetic.” “Mariah-Rose provided the building materials and a sturdy foundation for developing Healthy Relationships across different aspects of life with this book and I left it feeling ready to build!"

As the digital world is increasingly dominated by fake images and technofascism, I find that sitting outdoors and drawing what's right in front of me is becoming a small act of resistance, that I can practice everyday. 👁

Great article by @iddogefen.bsky.social on the dangers of technological metaphors 👏👏👏

“...achievements did not come from identifying familiar patterns, but from breaking them through messiness and unexpected mistakes.”
zuckermanbrain.bsky.social
Framing human brains in terms borrowed from artificial intelligence is dangerous—writes Shohamy lab grad student @iddogefen.bsky.social in @latimes.com. He explores the harm of trying to “optimize” or “fine-tune” people—for education, health, law, art or science. tinyurl.com/2zjsv892
Contributor: The human brain doesn't learn, think or recall like an AI. Embrace the difference
Inaccurate metaphors about the mind can cause real harm, for instance leading educators to 'train' children like algorithms.

Me: "Who of these guys are ICE? There's the one in the mask, but then the rest just look like random chumps. Like, is this one an ICE guy? Is that an ICE guy?"

Josie: "I don't think any of them are nice guys, SI"

If any #neuroscientist wants to write an explainer on the psychological tools we can use to resist 'habituation,' I would be happy to illustrate it. ✏️

I think we are going against some pretty strong human instincts here. It would be a good application of science for the people! ✊ #resist

When this is over, if we ever get to rebuild, we have to talk about real protections for speech including mass speech. The right to free speech is nothing if demonstrators can be shot and gassed. That has to be flat illegal.
