The New Machinery

The contraptions presented in The New Machinery, a new series of constructed works, are amalgamations of parts. Their presence is mysterious and seductive, and while logic is implied, their function remains inscrutable. The machinery’s components are all material and light studies photographed from discarded objects—obsolete glass samples, disassembled machine parts, plastic toys, whose imperfections record their well-handled history. Drawings and markings created alongside these objects are photographed as well.

Does It Make Sense? is Greiman’s design for a two-sided fold–out issue of Design Quarterly magazine. Produced in 1986 entirely with MacDraw—an early digital drafting application—Does It Make Sense? layers textures of pixilated video, text, and appropriated imagery, evincing Greiman’s interest in time–based media, textiles, and environmental graphics

This is a book and a song. Mmm… Skyscraper I Love You is a song by the band Underworld, and the lyrics by Karl Hyde were about New York city. Anyone that is aware of Hyde’s work would know it is heavily reliant on words; from lyrics he writes that are a a mixture of songwriting, overheard conversations and observations on the street, recorded in his ears much like a street photographer uses a lens. These lyrics were then taken up Hyde in collaboration with John Warwicker of design company Tomato. They both then used painting and typography in order to make a book of words. Tomato is almost an extension of the band Underworld, Hyde being part of the informal company, they made music videos, design artwork and promotional material as part of the creative process of the music, much like the relationship between Stanley Donwood and Radiohead.

They Live

They Live is among the best films that use typography for storytelling. The hidden messages are done in bold sans serif. Lettering in matte paintings are done by hand. The typography reflects corporate advertising of the ’70s and ’80s, where strong bold sans was a common sight, and ties into Carpenter’s commentary on consumerism. Props are using typefaces, either Tempo or Twentieth Century.

Wolfe's experience with the advertising industry is what led him to create such a statement attacking the emptiness of consumerism and marketing. The global "Panic Now" campaign which shredded all gloss and romance from ads reducing them to shrill messages to panic.
