who made a huge contribution as a volunteer, spearheading a lot of the early collation and databasing of APS records. And as always, thank you to everyone else that made all of this possible, especially with your donations to the crowdfunding. These are our eighth and ninth birds to be tracked.

Clive comes to us thanks to the Victorian Wader Study Group as a tribute to the late Clive Minton, widely recognised as the ‘grandfather’ of shorebird research in Australia. Inhancer is thanks to Birdlife Australia as a tribute to Ian Hance.

We are absolutely thrilled to introduce Clive and Inhancer, a pair caught yesterday in the Macquarie Marshes and fitted with GPS 4G transmitters from Global Messenger. We are immensely grateful to the local landholders, Leanne, Garry and Jet Hall, who were central in making it happen.

Excellent graphic from @birdlifeoz.bsky.social about the all too common mix up between the Australasian Bittern and Nankeen Night-heron.

Kanangra-Boyd National Park at its best this weekend. This wildlife paradise is home to Glossy Black Cockatoos, Yellow-bellied Gliders and Small Alpine Xenicas, among many other rare species. And I reckon that Mt Cloudmaker, the peak near the sun, is one of Australia’s best hikes.

Male Australasian Bitterns are highly territorial in the breeding season. Many are now on their way from the Riverina’s rice fields to coastal wetlands in NSW, VIC and SA for winter. Latest Australian population estimate is only 1300 (+~700 in NZ) but conservation action is building. Glorious birds.

Check out this excellent phone camera footage just in from Murrami rice grower, Doug Johnson. Another season of Australasian Bitterns breeding in the NSW Riverina’s rice crops is nearing its end and these birds will soon disperse up to 600 km to their wintering sites.

👀 LOOK AT THIS NEW BREEDING RECORD!! It’s from an undisclosed wetland in the Townsville region of north QLD. This incredible sighting of a male Australian Painted-snipe with his three babies is absolutely sensational. Photos by Graham Holder.

Yeah, highly mobile. This is one of our birds from last year. Marcelina flew from near Balranald to Daly Waters!

One of our Macquarie Marshes birds finally hit 5G coverage and just gave us a dump of 573 fixes! HE’S IN NORTH QLD! Its a gold mine of data for the endangered Australian Painted-snipe.

Check out our recent upload of some high accuracy tracking fixes to the NSW Bionet Wildlife Atlas, all originating from just the two properties where we’ve tagged birds. Be it Narriearra Caryapundy Swamp National Park or private land in the Pilliga, revealing new APS sites like this is priceless.

👀 Look at this stunner from Derby yesterday! Jake Barker and Larissa Potter hit the jackpot at Munkajarra, one of only three known sites in WA over the past two or three years:

‘Hope’ is a gorgeous female Australian Painted-snipe, tagged in the Macquarie Marshes last Oct. In Dec, she headed north like previous birds had (e.g. Birdsville, Daly Waters). After 400 km, she settled in Currawinya NP but recently changed course, now 500 km SE in the Pilliga!

I have finally arrived here, bringing with me all things threatened Australian waterbirds, wetland management and private land conservation in the Murray-Darling. To get started here’s some recent Australasian Bittern action at Gayini’s vast Lignum wetlands in the Lowbidgee.
