Yes it’s very hard to see why there would be a rise in disruptive, populist politics, given how successful the neoliberal project has been…

US democratic backsliding has been faster than in Turkey, Russia, Hungary. Importantly “characterised primarily by one-time unilateral executive actions” which js potentially more reversible.

Powerful launch party last night. Our family was so proud and inspired by the campaign she’s building for DC

Flu is surging in the US right now. The CDC has run out of colors to depict the severity. But meanwhile RFK and HHS, through a process that breaks major governance norms in how arbitrary it was, decide to stop recommending kids get the flu vaccine.

Thrilled to launch the Portuguese version of our report in Brasilia at @unaids.org board. Thank you @nisiatrindadelima.bsky.social for your leadership and vision on the Global Council and helping shape the research and the real, actionable solutions to break the inequality-pandemic cycle.

Deeply inspired to meet President @lulaoficialbluesky.bsky.social and to discuss our research on the Inequality-Pandemic Cycle with Minister @padilhando.bsky.social.
Reminded by these remarkable leaders that just, people-centered governance is the response to the collapsing old order..

Reminder: all drugs have risks. Vaccines to prevent among healthy face higher bar. That’s the point.
COVID has killed a lot of kids. Flu even more.
Dr Prasad’s moves here are deadly and intentional.

Reminder that only for some people and some countries are “we” in the “post-pandemic” and able to move on to other issues.

The use of passive voice here is doing so much work… I just wonder who it might be who could make this tragedy that needs to stop, stop?

Important, complex day on AIDS, TB, Malaria. Those saying Global Fund is dead=wrong. US surprise $4.6b pledge, total $11.34b. South Africa, India, New Zealand, Cote D'Ivoire, foundations increase. BUT still billions short of what's needed. France, EC, Japan missing in action. Complex....

I’m here in Polokwane and the US just blocked a G20 Health Minister declaration, refused to include UHC or Equity because, well, they don’t believe in universal, taxes, equity, or solidarity they say

These two brilliant people, lucky to learn from them and be inspired by them.

Our new report: Breaking the Inequality-Pandemic Cycle
We find clear empirical evidence inequality is making the world more vulnerable to pandemics: outbreaks become pandemics, pandemics last longer & do more damage, pandemics ⬆️ inequality and fuel the cycle

What if decline in dominance of the west isn’t a problem?
Great talk today at @ausis.bsky.social Amitav Acharya, The Once and Future World Order argues the core ideas of world order come as much from the South as from Europe or US. Diversity of ideas may help w stability and peace long term.

Here’s the thing: US *does* pay 3x what other countries do in pharma prices. But it’s not what Donald says: it’s because we use NONE of the regulatory tools we could to bring prices down

Wait til everyone hears we pay 99% more than it actually costs to make the drugs AND taxes pay most of the R&D!

history and practices of authoritarianism don’t suggest no need to worry. read the text, this new EO targets way beyond violence to efforts to “change or direct policy outcomes” and targets non profits, foundations that support undefined “extremism on migration, race, and gender”
