back before I started my current in-house job I had the distinct pleasure of copyediting this book. very smart analysis and written with a lot of heart. highly recommended!

A reminder for academic book authors:

Yes, it’s totally fine to flag a couple of people who should not peer review your book

But do it in a phone call, not the proposal, not an email

well, that one, they say, was rejected by speakers.

this project looks purely descriptivist—like linguistic anthro, just documenting and collecting what's out there, being said by people

well, I found this page on the Yale Grammatical Diversity Project's website. it documents the existence of "that's" as a relative possessive, but it doesn't make any statement about whether the construction should be considered "grammatically correct"

the (original) length of that intro!

haha see I have no beef with S-ending names in possessive form. Miles Davis’s name looks fine to me like that.

and I will need to investigate further, but I’m not sure grammarians would say the possessive “that’s” *is* technically correct

“a term that’s origins”
“a concept that’s time has come”

the “that’s” in these phrases sounds really off to me

I saw the possessive form of the relative pronoun “that” in an online article today:

“…a term referring to a new online slang term that's origins stem from…”

looks *really* weird to me in print. has anyone else spotted this usage in the wild?

Body-camera video appears to contradict the government’s claim that Marimar Martinez, 30, drove toward officers before one of them opened fire at her late Saturday morning in Brighton Park, her attorney claimed.

have you seen The Parallax View? also directed by Pakula and also heavily featuring old-fashioned phone calls and paper documents

I’ll admit I don’t know ANY of the writers on the list! so I’m going purely on the one-sentence synopses I read. I should say I am still interested in exploring these writers! just not thrilled if the committee is sticking with literary realism, which has always been dominant in the prestige economy
matthewsomoroff.bsky.social
just read a summary of the Booker Prize shortlist this year. looks like the committee went all in for dramatic realism, which seems like a regression 😕
