This sizable Pileated Woodpecker was hammering on a hollow log next to the trail. Loud, bright, hard to miss. I went a few steps away to watch strangers get excited spotting them.

I love the light at winter's minimum up north. Here the sun peaks at 13 degrees above the horizon so sunrise slowly eases into sunset.

This looks due south at 1230. Waking up before the sun is miserable, but the light all day can be ethereal.
