It’s wrong to dismiss Panahi’s involvement in the far right. Her main audience isn’t old Australian tv viewers. She sometimes gets millions of foreign views on her YouTube clips, just look at these recent ones since the Kirk murder. She’s part of the US extremist mediascape.
September 13, 2025 at 8:39 AM
Murdoch’s Sky News Australia is so eager to be part of US MAGA that they’ve posted almost 100 Youtube videos regarding Kirk in the last 24hrs. Some are straight news, others idolising him or blaming ‘the left’ even before anyone knows who the culprit was. Why do we let them operate tax free here?
September 12, 2025 at 7:35 AM
Does the same go for Murdoch’s Sky News Aust? They have plenty of fabricated tears over this US anti-gun control extremist, getting millions of views. They weren’t this upset when US schoolchildren or Democrats got shot.

Enjoyed this year’s Sydney Film Festival. Brazil’s The Secret Agent, and Iran’s It Was Just An Accident were great. And there was Jodie Foster in the French mystery Vie Privee, Ethan Hawke as Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon, Twinless, and the 1985 anime Angel’s Egg. #film

This recent survey result from Essential was startling. Young Australian men (many of them stuck in US-based social media bubbles) are far less likely to be concerned about Trump’s govt than everyone else, even older men (who are usually more conservative). #auspol essentialreport.com.au

This cute #gecko has been visiting our kitchen recently to snack on bugs. I’d never seen geckos in #Sydney before, they always used to stay further up north. Have they recently moved south? Slowly gotten used to Sydney the way the ibis, lorikeets and bats did? Or it could just be an escaped pet!

Here’s a good example of Murdoch’s social media propaganda tactics. Sky News Australia’s YouTube page publishing multiple versions of the same anti-Labor story at the same time today, hoping one will take off. #auspol

It depends what plan you sign up for, but that is the standard price. If you sign up and let it renew automatically they’ll charge you $32 every 4 weeks ($416 a year), or if you sign up for a year at the start it’s lowered to $260, for a totally crap product. ABC is still much cheaper!

If Google maps are going to rename things just to keep an American idiot happy, can we play along by renaming American places please?
We could call the US ‘South Canada’ (the unfortunate southern cousin of ‘Canada’ Canada), and Texas could revert to Tejas!

That was curious. Has anyone else experienced this with #DeepSeek? I went fishing on a sensitive topic, and it wrote a couple of pages on the subject, and at the end wiped it all and gave me this message. But i had already seen much of what it immediately censored. Seems a strange way to do it.

The #Oscars managed to find a decent mix of films to nominate, in a slim year. Happy to see some noms for Aussies (Guy Pearce, Memoir of a Snail), and older actors (Isabella Rossellini, Demi Moore). The new President won’t be happy with noms for Sebastian Stan & Jeremy Strong in The Apprentice.

Was rewatching Merchant Ivory’s brilliant Maurice (1987) this week for the first time in ages, with Hugh perfectly cast in it. I think those of us who knew him as a solid actor in his early films before the big romantic comedy hits came along find it easier to respect him than some late comers.

News Corp paying no tax in Aust means they don’t contribute to the community, but also that local companies can’t compete, which is an obvious injustice that most of our media won’t discuss. And how are they using their advantage? To make endless ‘Lefties Losing It’ YouTube clips for the far right.

Musk’s abuse of Twitter’s political power made him a lot richer, so Zuckerberg’s decided to head the same way, just without the late night ketamine-fuelled outbursts. Meta’s content is about to become even more rubbish and unsafe.
The US oligarchs are out of control.
It’s nice to have Bluesky!

Uhoh, this Bluesky Trending beta isn’t looking good if this is going to be a typical sample. Would be great if they could resource it up to have separate ones, so we could have one here for topics popular in Australia. Or at least one that didn’t make it all about the USA. #Trending @bsky.app

Made an effort to watch more silent films in 2024, mostly from
Hollywood & Germany. Swanson, Valentino, Keaton, Garbo, Crawford, Fairbanks, Gish, all the faces.
Apart from my own dvds, Kanopy has been the best of the streamers available in Australia where I’ve found quality restored silents.

SkyNews Aust’s framing is that Dutton is seeking to be the unifier and it’s his critics who are being divisive, which is News Corps framing of almost everything now. And even when the public doesn’t buy their angle completely, they can still use it to say Albanese has ‘lost control of the narrative’

Just watched these Hollywood in #Sydney films. Remember them filming here during covid. Both reasonably enjoyable. Fall Guy needed a trim. Enjoyed all the harbour glamour shots, and the local touches (good coffee!), and watching them get the geography wrong. Local filmmakers rarely use Sydney well.

Using all legal methods to help your son, who’s recovered from drug addiction, and who received harsher penalties because he’s your son, IS the moral high ground on a human level, and doesn’t break any norms anyway (family pardons aren’t new). Media holding Dems to a false standard helped Trump.

Work Christmas Party tip: if you turned up because you felt you had to, and you’re uncomfortable and want to leave but worried people will think you haven’t stayed long enough -> Start singing Carly Simon’s ‘Jesse’ to yourself, and strut out. It’s a good struttin home song. Hope that helps. 👍

And yes I still have my decade’s old copies on my shelves. Can’t find the Candide right now, but here are the other two. You’ll be pleased the Middlemarch is a Penguin. 🐧

Current reading stack. Am one of those people eager to start new books before finishing the current ones. I spend a lot of time in bookshops, plus Sydney has great libraries. More books are always a good thing. #books #reading
