As someone who studied International Relations, it is utterly crazy-making the way treaties are treated in the media as pinky swears between pals rather than, according to the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, the “supreme Law of the Land”.

You might be underestimating the degree to which that is understood but is not so easily solved because tech’s machinations do work and US economic coercion on their behalf (e.g. Canada’s now abandoned digital services tax, Trumps recent threats to retaliate with tariffs in Europe on behalf of X)

(2/2) MPs were forced to cut short official Taiwan visit and our ecar industry is being thrown under the (electric) bus. After years of revelations of PRC election interference, coercion/threats against Chinese Canadians, and industrial + security espionage we are now having to eat a shit sandwich.

I think this is more of a symptom. We are having to compromise our alliances and democratic principles for this in a way we wouldn't have done ten years ago. (1/2)
