When I moved to eastern NC the classic sauce seemed to be more like the brand "George's BBQ Sauce", with apple cider vinegar and tomato paste. It is much more of a sweet-sour vinegar flavor and is reddish-colored. It is slightly thicker liquid, less acrid, more of a dipping sauce.
