Really can't emphasize enough that Character.AI is a predatory company profiting off of vulnerable children and if you're a teacher using the platform - or other LLMs - to "talk" with fictional or historical figures just stop.

I’ve heard some stories recently of people complying with fascists’ demands after they were threatened.
As a violence researcher (and someone who has received a good deal of threats), everyone should know that complying will not save you. It only teaches the threatener that threats work.

Just spent the morning interviewing the founding research director of PBS. Amazing how closely connected public broadcasting was to early communication departments.

At risk of restarting the discourse, I wanted to point out what I noticed from the reactions to this:
1. ~2/3rd of replies were: no, we’re still plenty dumb. Another 1/3rd was like, yes, we’re much smarter/less awful than Twitter. (It seems the latter group must not meet the former often!)

I spoke with a student last week who thought Bluesky and Mastodon were “too intellectual” to sub for Twitter. What do we think about this?

I forgot to keep posting about sourdough. I have been successful! Here’s my favorite loaves so far. I’m still working on scoring - the slice is from the one with a less pronounced “ear” because I’m giving the prettier loaf to a neighbor.

Here’s my pedagogical dilemma of the day: when do you task students with teaching each other/themselves (say by summarizing a chapter they read) vs. lecturing on it yourself to emphasize the key points you think they should know?
