it almost strikes me as a case of them initially wanting to just go with the mocap performance, seeing that it looked kinda bland on a fantasy dragon, and then had the VFX/animation team make something more striking but still wanting to show off the BTS footage so they can go "look at our cool tech"

I was gonna say how I understand the logic (it is possible to have a 3d model's rig be puppetted by a very different-looking mocap reference if you set it up the right way) however if you look at a side-by-side comparison of the BTS footage and the final product they don't resemble each other at all
