What I got into in January. #BookSky

Catching up on all the blind spots I have in classic American cinema. Tonight was North by Northwest. Crop Duster sequence, even though I knew what was coming from seeing it out of context, had me freaking out. Master of suspense, baby!!!

Haven’t watched much but it’s been a banger of a month. #FilmSky

Safe and evacuated. Walking out of our apt to see the Hollywood Hills on fire, 12 or so blocks away, was something else. Cinematic for lack of a better word? Helicopters flying overhead, dumping water. Embers from the fire flying in front of my face. Prayers up to those impacted.

Challenging myself to read 100 professional screenplays by the end of 2025. In doing so, I hope to share some lessons learned along the way. If anyone wants to join me, feel free and use the hashtag #100Scripts as I’ll be using it to help keep track!

BEGINNERS. One of the first films to really resonate with me emotionally as a teenager. Such a sensitive and vulnerable film. I used to put it on just to relax before bed, one of my all-time favorites. #FilmSky

Se7en. The world is a fine place and worth fighting for. I agree with the second part. A film that showed me how powerful character arcs and themes can go. Witnessing the worst horrors of the world and still getting up to bat to fight against it. That’s the human experience. #FilmSky

Before Sunrise. My all-time favorite film. I may be a horror writer, but my love for Linklater’s naturalistic approach knows no bounds. In the hands of great artists, cinema can really shape you. As a love-stuck teenager, I never really recovered from watching this. And I hope I never do. #Filmsky

Had what one would call a religious experience witnessing Interstellar in IMAX once again. 10 years ago I walked into a theater and my life was changed for the better. This time, hit tore at my chest even harder. Love is most powerful thing in this universe.

Put on Logan Lucky last night. Such great character writing throughout. What feels like natural dialogue introducing you to each character, turns into information that’s later mined throughout the film. Lowkey brilliant filmmaking.

Some of my other favorites in recent years. I mean, awards shows are political machines backed by major campaigns. Comparing art in a competitive nature is already something I feel weird about. Regardless, I love horror for so many reasons, but one of them being the varied performances we get.

Lead women in horror act their asses off every year, often giving the most diverse and exciting performances. They almost never get the awards love they deserve, so we gotta shout ‘em out when we see ‘em. Juliette Gariépy in Red Rooms puts on maybe my favorite lead performance of the year. #FilmSky

Red Rooms: Deranged in the best way possible. Slow-burning in a way you both desperately need the answers and don’t wanna face the truth. Incredible lead performance.

Accidentally left out the most important of them all. Which I could only find in 720p and without motion. So much character captured with the eyes, man. A classic tool in the filmography of Matt Reeves. Seen here in the opening and closing shots of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Rewatched The Batman post-Penguin. Can’t stop thinking about how fucking well they captured the eyes in this one.

Rounded out the day with A Real Pain featuring a Jesse Eisenberg Q&A. Cried too many tears to count. Kieran Culkin puts together one of my favorite performances of all time, maybe? Jesse Eisenberg’s script wears its heart on its sleeve and produces one of my favorite films of the year.

The Substance is an absolute joy (in some ways?) to watch in a theater. Specifically loved how economic Coralie Fargeat was with introducing the mechanics of the substance itself. Great performances followed by a fun Q&A w/ Margaret Qualley 💉🍳
