Present in San Francisco. Past in theater. Future unknown.
Attending my first Pride Parade in 1989, I was so surprised to see my Congresswoman in the parade, taking what I assumed to be the personal and professional risk of participating, that I wrote her a letter to thank her. I received this letter in reply.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still find it satisfying to show up to my polling place on Election Day to cast my ballot.

My favorite Prunella Scales trivia is that when she played QEII in "Single Spies" in 1988, it broke an unspoken protocol by being the first time a reigning monarch had been portrayed on the London stage. The strength it must have taken to do that was evident in all her work. I was a fan.

Do you suppose Trump checked with Melania first to see if it was okay to tear her office down?

I'm still getting this year's Halloween party food sorted out, but here was my contribution last year: bread sticks dipped in white chocolate and colored sugar. 🙂

With the Blue Angels sidelined by the government shutdown, the Canadian Snowbirds stepped up to take their place during today's Fleet Week Air Show. I'm not sure how much we deserve it these days, but thanks for the love, Canada!

To me, Diane Keaton wasn't always the obvious choice going into a movie, but she always felt like the right choice by the end. She brought talent and beauty, of course, but she infused her performances with a humanity that I can't believe was just acting.

Two years ago today, I completed one of my favorite projects, exploring California by visiting all 58 counties, all in under a year and without flying. It's a huge, beautiful, diverse place, and I was honestly unprepared for what an amazing experience it would be.

A wildfire is raging in Washington State. On Wednesday, ICE agents showed up and started arresting the firefighters.

Feel safer now?

As I try to wrap my mind around our current times, I've been reading a lot of non-fiction for context, including books about people who divisively seize power for themselves, laws be damned. I just finished this monumental Pulitzer-winning bio of J. Edgar Hoover. Highly recommended.
