if you know something about cognition and especially *embodied* cognition, the problem of attention takes on almost monstrous proportions - because you begin to understand that attention is the moment-to-moment progenitor of *how we decide what to do next* -- attention is at the root of "free will"!

of course the central problem of our time is that the same tools that can give us god-like powers are so effective at hijacking our attention and motivational systems & robbing us of the volition we would otherwise use to get the most out of them
