I can't stop thinking about this. We're pursuing zero fire risk in multifam, while tolerating much more in single-fam. People respond by building and living in single-fam, where they're exposed to not only one of the highest fire death risks in the developed world, but also TONS more car crash risk

Love this new report on buildings' relative fire safety from @alexhrwtz.bsky.social and Pew colleagues.

You are off by a factor of one thousand.

By law, health insurance companies have to spend at least 80% of their premium dollars on patient care.

Doctor pay is a huge part of why healthcare in America is so costly. Where exactly do you think the money is going?
maxdubler.com
The American Medical Association works very hard to cap the number of medical school and residency spots so doctor pay will remain very high.

Literally just fund more residency spots.

Developers are not major donors to YIMBY organizations and causes.

Like, sure, if the landlords are colluding on pricing in a way that violates state or federal law, go after them; but I wish people on the left were just a little more skeptical of this software company’s claimed ability to massively increase their customers’ profits.

This is not a policy lever that YIMBYs can easily pull.

Various YIMBY groups do, however, support efforts to offer below-market construction loans to housing developers and/or to reform condo deposit laws to make those homes easier to finance.
maxdubler.com
One reason I am skeptical of the various lawsuits is that many of them rest on an obviously-wrong assumption that landlords were pursuing 100% occupancy before RealPage came along and told them that the profit maximizing occupancy rate is about 95%.

The thesis of YIMBYism is that housing prices are set by supply and demand; so building more homes in the places people want to live can bring down prices.

You do understand that a ton of the equity in private equity is pension fund money, right?

Two thirds of Americans own their homes and rental housing is an incredibly diversified and competitive market.

You need sufficient station density and bike balancing to manage that.

I, @holz-bau.bsky.social & @matthutchins.bsky.social are quoted here about WA State fire marshals trying to increase ADU access path widths to 5' (vs. 3' required for apt bldg corridors/stairs!). I note a lot of fire/bldg code opposition is cultural, not technical www.theurbanist.org/2025/10/07/f...

Scooters are cool too, particularly because they can be brought into your destination with you.

SB 79, signal priority for all Metro rail, two-way protected bike lanes on every arterial, and a dense electric bike share system would transform that city in a decade or less.

Nobody said that opposing the Israeli government is anti semitic.

We are saying the term “spiritually Israeli” is anti semitic.
