Our children’s classrooms have for too long been a battleground in the nation’s political wars. As the State Board of Education overhauls social studies standards for Texas schools in the coming months, board members must set aside politics and focus on teaching the truth. ## What Texans Want Texans want new education standards for social studies that are: - Based on facts, sound scholarship and the advice of qualified experts - Free from the influence of hyper-partisan political operatives, current or former party officials, party consultants, or curriculum vendors - Representative of the experiences and contributions of the many different peoples who have shaped our nation’s history ## The State Board Must Act State board appointments to a key advisory panel already risk turning the revision of the social studies standards into another political circus. **We call on the board to focus on teaching the truth and replace three of the newly appointed “content advisors”: ** - **David Barton** has no formal training as a historian or social scientist. Trained historians warn that Barton’s arguments - especially his claim that separation of church and state is a myth – grossly distort the historical record, including the very real influence of faith in American history. Barton served as Texas GOP Vice Chair for nearly a decade up to 2006 and is not a politically neutral voice. - **David Randall** is Executive Director of the conservative Civics Alliance, whose controversial social studies standards the National Council for Social Studies says would have “damaging and lasting effects on the civic knowledge of students and their capacity to engage in civic reasoning and deliberation.” Randall’s appointment is an exercise in putting political thumbs on the scale, favoring the particular ideological viewpoint of an organization with an agenda. - **Jordan Adams** is an education consultant who worked as a curriculum director for the politically conservative Hillsdale College. Hillsdale has been a partisan player in the nation’s political wars and has developed its own revisionist history curriculum materials. Adams’ appointment gives the Hillsdale political agenda undue influence and its deeply controversial curriculum materials an unfair and highly inappropriate advantage in the Texas marketplace. ## A Fair and Transparent Appointment Process State board members should withdraw these three appointments and replace them with content advisors who are qualified experts focused on teaching the truth, not hyper-partisan activists focused on political agendas. The advisory board’s appointment process should be transparent, fair, and above all representative of the entire state of Texas. ## Our asks: We call on the Texas State Board of Education to: 1. Remove the three activist content advisors – David Barton, David Randall and Jordan Adams – and replace them with qualified experts in history and social studies who are politically neutral. 2. Establish clear, fair, and transparent guidelines for appointing content advisors. 3. Ensure that social studies standards are based on facts and sound scholarship and are representative of all peoples who have shaped American history, free from hyper-partisan influence. ## Teach the Truth Texas students deserve an honest education based on the truth, not hyper-partisan politics. Tell the State Board of Education: keep politics out of the classroom and give every child the honest education they deserve.
