As someone else already said in this thread, there was a loose continuity in the films for the first 40-ish years. The reference to Bond's marriage in Licence to Kill. Pierce Brosnan recognizing the jet pack.

I wasn't surprised to see Bond seemingly die right before the end of No Time to Die. I've seen that happen in Bond films before. But up until then, he'd always show up again at the very end, with a Bond girl on his arm and a quip for the audience.

The network made a mistake forcing David Lynch to do this. Lynch wanted the murder of Laura Palmer to remain the great, unsolved mystery. When the ratings went down, the network was in a position to force the issue. Not that it helped tge ratings afterall.
