West Yorkshire has a deep and enduring friendship with India 🤝

This week, I'm joining the Prime Minister in India to bang the drum for our region.

I'll be promoting our strengths and building relationships that will mean more jobs, investment and opportunities back home.

My statement on the second anniversary of the October 7th terrorist attack on Israel.
Today marks the second anniversary of the appalling October 7th terrorist attack on Israel, in which 1,200 civilians lost their lives and 251 hostages taken - more than 100 of whom have now been killed.

This conflict has resulted in terrible bloodshed. I hope that an end is in sight - one that leads to the return of all hostages, for humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, and a lasting peace for the region, including a two-state solution for the safety and security of Israelis and Palestinians.

Last week’s appalling terror attack on Heaton Park synagogue remains fresh in our minds. Many in the UK’s Jewish community are scared.

Now more than ever we must stand together in the face of antisemitism.

Those who seek to divide us must be opposed and defeated by our British values of tolerance, kindness and respect for all.

A true Yorkshire icon was honoured today.

Rob Burrow showed us what real courage looks like - both on the pitch, and throughout his battle with motor neurone disease.

And now Northern Rail's train will carry his legacy across the North every day.

West Yorkshire has a long, proud history of partnership and collaboration with Ireland. 🤝

It was fantastic to welcome Cillian O’Kelly, the new Irish Consul General, to our region.

I look forward to working together and continuing to strengthen our ties.

People in Yorkshire deserve better than our current creaking, unreliable rail network.

That's why we’re calling on government to back our ambitious vision for a railway that works for everyone, from communities to businesses.

Culture is not just a nice to have.

It transforms places, creates opportunity & enriches lives.

Great to speak at the Local Government Association conference about One Creative North - a collaboration of Northern Mayors, partners, and industry leaders determined to unlock our creative potential.

West Yorkshire is home to the North's largest manufacturing workforce.

With Ionix launching its new advanced materials facility in Leeds, this is another fantastic vote of confidence in our region's talent and reinforces our role as a global leader in advanced manufacturing.

My statement on the news of Angela Rayner's resignation from government.
I have been honoured to work alongside Angela Rayner over the last decade. She has been an incredible Deputy Prime Minister and has shown great leadership. From driving devolution, to the construction of more council homes and improving workers’ rights - her achievements in government will be long-lasting.

Her commitment to building a stronger country, based on the principles of social justice and equality of opportunity has been at the heart of everything she has delivered.

Angela has been a great champion of mayors and our ambitions for our regions, and I want to thank her for her advocacy throughout her time at the centre of government.

At a time when towns and cities across England face urgent challenges, it is vital that mayors of all political parties work together to speak with one voice, on behalf of the 30 million people we collectively represent.

We owe them a great debt.
