But to do so would be to ignore what the back of the book downplays as its’ “fantastical twist”: Soulmates are real, and if you have one their first name is tattoed onto your wrist. It’s a great idea, one that, if executed right, exposes and interrogates the artifice of genre Romance. But it’s one that immediately raises a number of questions about relationships and the history and culture that surround them. Do people have marks from birth, or they develop over time? Does homophobia exist in a world that has systemically outed queer people across history? How is fashion different to highlight or obscure soulmarks? Do people still date outside of soulmate relationships, and if so does society view non-soulmate relationships differently? (Yes, unknown.) Are there people without soulmates, and if so does society treat them differently? (There are, but we don’t meet any.) What about poly people? (They’re alluded to, and some people have two soulmarks, but it’s incredibly rare.) Very little time is spent developing the concept in exchange for an otherwise completely contemporary setting, just one where both leads feel compelled to date each other because they’re soulmates. It’s not fair to expect any level of developed worldbuilding out of a book that clearly wasn’t trying to do so, but with so little else to engage me I found myself trying to parse together the implications behind the worldbuilding, only to be left disappointed every single time. I want to say that it detracts from the plot and characters, but the entire soulmark concept kept me engaged enough to elevate the overall reading exper…

putting your demo end trigger in the middle of a room you had to run across the world to get to pretty much guarantees that it's going to feel abrupt—moving it like 30 seconds later to when you actually warp to the second island would've worked way better, but that's nitpicking
That's the end of the story included in the DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined Demo. However, you can pick right up where you left off in the full version of the game.

crazy how the trails in the sky remake features expensive, flashy motion-captured cutscenes for key moments and yet the school play sequence completely falls flat in the face of the original whose creative maximization of pre-rendered sprites and pulled-back camera feel inherently more theatrical
