Is anarchist science possible? As an experiment, we got together a large group of computational neuroscientists from around the world to work on a single project without top down direction. Read on to find out what happened. 🤖🧠🧪
Diagram of how the "collaborative modelling of the brain" (COMOB) project started. Starting material lead to group research or solo research, coming together in online workshops (monthly) in an iterative cycle, finishing with writing up together. The diagram is illustrated with colourful cartoon blob characters.

How does the structure of a neural circuit shape its function?

@neuralreckoning.bsky.social & I explore this in our new preprint:

Our event-based method enables precise delay learning for spiking neural networks, improving performance on Yin-Yang, SHD, and SSC datasets. We introduce the first gradient based delay learning approach for recurrent connections, achieving 26x faster performance and 50% lower memory usage.
Efficient Event-based Delay Learning in Spiking Neural Networks
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are attracting increased attention as a more energy-efficient alternative to traditional Artificial Neural Networks. Spiking neurons are stateful and intrinsically recur...

Just out in J Neuromorph Comput & Eng: Loss shaping enhances exact gradient learning with Eventprop in Spiking Neural Networks doi.org/10.1088/2634.... With @neworderofjamie.bsky.social.
We report how Eventprop scales to harder learning tasks.
TL;DR: It works great but not without extra effort. 🧪🧵
