I once had a series of R&Rs where MY responses alone totaled 10k words. I want credit for another article for that.

🎙️ New HPS Pod!

I chat with Prof. Lydia Patton about HOPOS — the history of philosophy of science. From her editorship of the journal to the future of the discipline, Patton shares why a historical lens reshapes core philosophical questions.

Nah, you can't do that. That's Ohio State's thing.

Chuck Schumer will write a very strongly worded letter.

Unsolicited advice for incoming PhD students:

Be wary of faculty who tend to shit-talk their colleagues in the presence of students. Don't allow yourself to be conscripted into their petty rivalries

(Not casting aspersions. I do it myself. And now that I am doing work that's more social/institutional history, I find myself writing with conflicting tenses regularly...)

Has anyone written on historians of philosophy's propensity to write in present tense about historical philosophical theories? There is some sort of Platonic assumption about the atemporality of the conceptual systems we are engaging with, right?

Your post made me read that DN article. SO THANKS FOR THAT.

The yellow text on a dark background is giving me serious Star Wars opening crawl vibes 😂

Today I’m presenting my talk, “Reflections on Crisis Science” at @ishpssb2025.bsky.social, 14:30–15:00. Come and hear about my take on philosophical accounts of science in times of crisis and reflections on conservation biology! #ishpssb2025 #philsci

I really enjoyed this email. If the first things you say are that people won’t be replaced by AI and that we can use it responsibly and ethically, then I’m pretty sure people will be replaced and it will be used irresponsibly and unethically.

UGH the Institute for the Unity of Science had a relationship with both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science. We cannot have one organization with separate relationships with distinct AAAS's. 😠

Apparently Wesley & Merilee Salmon's son Bruce witnessed it, and reported that Ian became a celebrity among the Stanford students for this.
