If health systems had any taste, OT would be in charge. Until then, let's build community and redesign care
SNAP exists to reduce hunger by increasing purchasing power.
It is not designed to be a behavioral correction program.

Page 18 of the application proposes SNAP food restriction waivers framed to “lower healthcare costs by decreasing diet-related diseases and promoting long-term public health.”

Evidence and research do not support their statement and that raises serious red flags for me as a clinician.

Included in Nevada’s RHT application are policy proposals that were not highlighted in public presentations.
Page numbers matter. 👀

Nevada submitted its RHT program application quietly.
No statewide access or review of the document.
No public comment period on the application.
Important policies shouldn’t rely on obscurity.

Friendly reminder: accountability isn’t opposition.

Asking questions is how we protect state and federal programs from doing harm.

Rural healthcare doesn’t fail because people “make bad choices.”
It fails when wages, transportation, workforce shortages, and access barriers are ignored. Rural health transformation programming should address those.

When large sums of public money move quickly, oversight matters even more.
Following the funding is a public-health activity.

RHT proposals are supposed to be evidence-based, community-informed, and transparent.

Those words matter. I’ll keep coming back to them with appreciation for anyone who does the same.

Nevada’s RHT funding isn’t abstract, it shapes clinics, food access, workforce pipelines, and how care actually reaches rural communities.

Policy decisions here will affect real people, not spreadsheets.

The Rural Health Transformation Program (RHT) is a federal CMS initiative meant to improve access, workforce stability, and health outcomes in rural populations.

In theory? Sounds great.
In practice? I already have serious concerns with Nevada's application.

Nevada was awarded $180 million to strengthen rural healthcare.

Big question: How is the state planning to use it?

I’ll be posting updates as a Nevada healthcare provider reading the fine print, so you don’t have to. Follow along. 👀
