Fully agree with @cathygellis.bsky.social here. That congressional democrats are not constantly (and loudly) calling for Trump’s impeachment is a complete abdication of their constitutional duty. And it only further emboldens him.

Even in the face of this obvious existential threat to our Constitutional order, Congress has basically done nothing. In fact, it’s done worse than nothing by, instead of impeaching, pursuing normal order as if everything were business as usual: allowing Trump’s lackeys to burrow further into what’s left of our government, writing “laws” that our invading monarch and his minions will inevitably deem optional—or, worse, even use against us—and generally enabling his abuses by giving them an air of legitimacy as if they were the sorts of things that a President of the United States could do.

The political humiliation of this moment is not limited to the president nodding off or crashing out on camera, or to the slapstick sadism of the secret police B-teamers that his team of scheming viziers have spun up and sicced on every aspect of American life. It also manifests through this sort of degrading choice, and in the rituals of abasement forced upon voters who are eager to reject the regime in the most effective way possible and instead must negotiate with themselves on behalf of candidates who can't be bothered to do it. Do you want a candidate who supports genocide or one with a Nazi tattoo on his chest? is not only a question that will continue to be asked earnestly by people who previously rejected demands for such compromises, but one that cannot be answered without submitting to some amount of humiliation. All of it, in the end, becomes a question of what you will settle for, and how much you are willing to bear in exchange for a chance at making things less unbearable.

Welcome to the funhouse-mirror moral universe of 2025, where opposing cancel culture means leveraging federal power to get your opponents canceled, where draining the swamp means leveraging federal power to enrich the president’s family, where keeping Americans safe means leveraging federal power to terrorize American cities, and where holding power in institutions outside the government means performing cringing obedience to Trump’s whims. What’s so maddening about Disney’s capitulation on Kimmel isn’t that it’s cowardly and unjust in itself—though it’s both—but that it’s part of a growing chain of similar capitulations, one domino after another, powerful institutions yielding with barely the hint of a fight. And what’s maddening about that isn’t just that it’s revealing many of our leaders to be craven cynics—though it is—but that even by the cynical standards of those leaders, capitulation is a bad tactic. It doesn’t work. Institutions that give in only set themselves up for more punishment. Columbia University, which bent over backward to accommodate Trump’s demands, only won itself the right to pay the government $221 million, eviscerate its diversity programs, and reshape its identity. It could have fought back, but its leaders were apparently so allergic to principle that they chose to pursue a self-defeating course of appeasement rather than risk defending any principle at all.

Yet none of that really matters. To debate whether or not the president had solid evidence before he killed everyone aboard an alleged drug-smuggling boat is effectively to agree that the president is allowed to kill everyone aboard a drug-smuggling boat. There is nothing that comes anywhere close to giving the president that authority—not when he claims to be acting in the name of law enforcement, not when he claims to be fighting a war. Trump's assertion that Venezuelan criminals would count as terrorists and that terrorists can be treated as military targets is nonsense, but even if it were somehow true, if the United States military were legally and officially fighting a war in the Caribbean, opening fire on a retreating boat and then killing all the survivors would still be murder.

Very late to this post by @juliusgoat.bsky.social, but I could not agree more with every word of it.
It is completely baffling and beyond infuriating that there has been so little momentum around impeachment from Democrats.

We're told that regular failed impeachment will desensitize the population to the severity of impeachment. But regular failure to impeach does something far more dangerous: It desensitizes the population to the danger, because when a president does something and is not impeached for it, it effectively becomes something a president is allowed to do. Finally, we're told that "the people" are against impeachment, so impeachment would be a political loser. First, this is not true; a majority of American voters support impeachment. Second, this puts the cart so far in front of the horse the horse can't even see it. Even if we grant the false premise, we must ask: How much harder is it for "the people" to favor impeachment when nobody is impeaching? Why would "the people" think impeachment was necessary when the leaders whose duty it is to impeach refuse? Failing to impeach Trump while insisting he is a threat to democracy tells an incoherent story, and people don't believe a story the tellers themselves seem unconvinced by—even if the story is true.
