I am very anti carceral state but pro “give out a few traffic tickets before another person gets run over,” if the latter is possible without the former.

Anyway, the part that is maybe the most mind blowing to me is how often I have seen this happen right in front of Chicago Police. I’ve seen them watch someone jump out of the way of a car on the wrong side of the road and just… not act. No ticket, nothing.

Were they racing to the hospital? Late for their wedding? Missing a kid’s recital? No, they were just mad that seven cars were in front of them at a stop sign.

Maybe the craziest thing I saw in traffic this year was a guy who *drove onto the sidewalk* to get around a bunch of cars waiting at a stop sign, raced through the intersection and used a parking lane to cut in front of other cars, then slowly parallel parked a few hundred yards up the road.

Another thing I see every day is people using right turn lanes to cut in front of a long line of cars waiting at a light or stop sign. Over the past year I have seen four accidents caused this way, as someone uses a turn lane to race through the intersection to reinsert into the line of cars.

It is wild! They will have a “student driver” sticker on the back of their car and the flamethrower bass guy from mad max standing on the hood. I have seen people get out of their cars and yell at someone because that person didn’t give them right of way when they were ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD.
