Celtic lose their Champions League playoff v Kairat Almaty (Kazakhstan) on penalties. A shock but not a huge surprise.

Michael Collins was killed #OTD 1922. This handwritten report from the Adjutant of 1 Southern Division describes the ambush at Béal na Bláth (from the Moss Twomey papers at UCD Archives).

"During the journey Mr Collins travelled in the touring car and made himself very prominent."

1/2
UCDA P69/93
24 August 1922
2pp

1.	On Tuesday 22nd inst at 9.35am a party of Free Staters about 30 strong passed Beal na Blaith (sic) on the road to Bandon. They were preceded by a motor cyclist and travelled in a touring car, lorry and armoured car. Mr Collins was one of the party.
2.	A picked column 32 in number was mobilized and took up a position about ¼ of a mile from Beal na Blaith to await their return.
3.	At 6pm we got definite information from Bandon that the party had gone on to Clonakilty at 7.45pm we gave up hope of anything and decided to withdraw for the night.
4.	Some of us had got as far as the cross at Beal na Blaith when a messenger came on with information that the party had returned & were help up on the road by our Barricade.
5.	Fortunately 6 of our men had not left their position and three more managed to get back. Fire was immediately opened on the enemy by this section. The rest tried to get back to assist their comrades but were never in a position during the engagement to render any real assistance.
6.	The firing was terrific. The enemy relied chiefly on his machine guns. Now and again you could hear the crack of a rifle from our battle party, who never budged one inch from their position.
7.	The engagement lasted one hour. The enemy managed to remove the barricade, our men were to[o] far away to cover this point with their fire. They beat a retreat, leaving the motorcycle behind, towards Cork, our men continuing to fire on them.
8.	I have since learned the Mr. Collins was shot dead during the engagement. Our casualties were nil.
9.	The greatest praise is due to the 9 men who stuck to their positions under such a heavy fire. They claimed to have wounded at least three more of the enemy.
10.	The enemy used explosive bullets on what ever little rifle firing they indulged in.
11.	During the journey Mr Collins travelled in the touring car and made himself very prominent.

It just so happens that the Jubilee Room today is right next door to the room that in the Middle Ages was where those treasurers faced their judges - the Court of the Exchequer.

Excited to have Pádraig O'Macháin & Anna Hoffmann from UCC & the McCarthy MSI project (incorporating Inks & Skins) in Marsh's working on on our manuscripts. The inks in our 14th century Processional are still looking very vibrant!
