💡My results highlight how important it is to make it easier for mothers to leave violent partners safely and support them afterwards.

More broadly, they underscore the need for public policies to reshape gender norms and promote healthier models of partnership and fatherhood.

📌 To understand why, I study how the reform affected relationship dynamics and find evidence of an increase in separations.

This suggests that mandatory leave revealed information about the quality of the relationship, enabling some women to separate before violence escalated.

📉 I find that the most severe cases of violence decreased persistently for at least two years after childbirth, long after the end of the leave.

🧑🏽‍🍼 All parents whose child was born on or after April 1, 2019, were required to take leave together immediately after childbirth.

This way, I can compare IPV for women who give birth just before and after the reform, leveraging quasi-randomness in exact birth dates to identify causal effects

In my paper, I combine

🧮 administrative health records covering all births in public hospitals in Catalonia between 2006 and 2024

🏛️ with a Spanish reform that introduced mandatory paternity leave.

👉🏽Paternity leave is becoming a very popular family policy.

It targets the first months after childbirth, a period when the risk of violence at home is particularly high.

❗️But we know very little about how it affects intimate partner violence.

📉 The findings show that women whose partners qualified for mandatory leave faced a persistent reduction in IPV.
💡 This result is driven by an increase in separations allowing women to exit harmful relationship before violence escalates.
