Interestingly, Acetobacter sp. have been linked to positive effects on female reproduction. We find that in males, certain Acetobacter taxa are associated with reduced lifespan and accelerated aging, suggesting potential sex-specific or antagonistic roles.
mdonertas.bsky.social
While microbiota diversity changed with age, we found no strong link between diversity and male fitness. But specific taxa, especially Acetobacter, were consistently associated with aging-related traits.

4️⃣ Early-life rel. abd. of A. indonesiensis ~ reproductive senescence
5️⃣ Microbiota composition predicts chronological age (>85% accuracy) but not life history traits (possibly due to design/sample size)
mdonertas.bsky.social
Main findings:
1️⃣ Age-related shifts in the relative abundance of Acetobacter, Ralstonia, and Leuconostoc
2️⃣ Late-life rel. abundance of A. ascendens & A. pasteurianus ~ shorter lifespan
3️⃣ Early-life rel. abd. of A. ascendens ~ faster functional decline
mdonertas.bsky.social
Using 22 DGRP lines, we measured:
- Lifespan
- Early/late reproduction
- Early/late climbing performance
- Gut microbiota (16S rRNA) at days 5 & 26

We then asked: How does microbiota composition change with age and how does this relate to male life-history?
