I think you may be misunderstanding my point, which most certainly *isn't* that exploring issues of gender discrimination, disability and psychiatry in horror is in any way new or detrimental to the genre, but that the form in which they are explored has been watered down for mass appeal.

It's the difference between a story telling you that it's enemies are a nazi allegory, and hence you should be afraid vs a story that makes you so afraid that it reminds you about atrocities committed during war. Does that make sense?

That is also true, but this isn't about diverse casting, to be clear - rather it's about a trend of corporatized horror stories that are meant to align with their audiences' social/political beliefs over letting horror be personal, difficult, and openly interpretative.
