Through the summer months in Yeşilköy we used to play basketball ceaselessly, my cousin Michel and I, Agop, Ara and Aret in the grounds of the old Greek school. “Vor to you,” Michel and I would respond when the three met us with a hearty “Vor,” and we’d all five fall about in wild laughter. We knew: it meant “arse” in Armenian. Agop’s family had a huge green garden (large enough for three later buildings): we’d pick figs off the trees at one end, and kick a ball around at the other. Then Aret and Agop left for America. I for London. We have no news of Ara. Only Michel remains still in Istanbul. From five to one in twenty short years. A city where no one says vor any more cannot be Istanbul, cannot be my town. It cannot be where I became what I am. I ache for what it once was, I dream of it, I sing of it.

Excerpt from "A pre-Christian survival in mediaeval Irish hagiography," by D.A. Binchy, published in 'Ireland in early mediaeval Europe: Studies in memory of Kathleen Hughes,' Huges, et al., eds (1982), pp. 165-178. The remarkable blend of Christian and pagan motifs which runs right through mediaeval Irish hagiography sometimes ends in the absorption of the Christian into the pre-Christian practice. The transition from one to the other was effected without difficulty in what Gerard Murphy called the 'adolescent' minds of mediaeval Irish Christians; their complete acceptance of the faith did not mean for them the discarding of the native mos maiorum with its archaic institutions and its oral tradition. I propose here to illustrate the history of a clash between two very different concepts which employed substantially the same means for their realization: fasting as a Christian ascetic practice and the old native custom of fasting 'against' (Irish for, literally 'on') a superior dignitary in order to enforce a claim against him. The latter was an extremely archaic institution, rooted in primitive magic and dating from a period when the only method of redress open to a person of lowly status was to undertake a 'fast unto death' before the residence of the dignitary who refused to acknowledge his right. The latter, confronted with the prospect of his house and kindred being 'polluted' by the presence of a corpse for whose death he would be held responsible, would either settle the suitor's claim, or if he felt this to be unjustified or exaggerated, resort to counter-magic by himself undertaking a similar fast, thus neutralizing the menacing magic unleashed by the other's fast. The antiquity of this strange voie d'exécution is proved by the existence of an identical process in the oldest Hindu law-books; in classical Sanskrit it is called prāya and has been traced back not merely to the so-called 'Institutes of Manu' (the Manusmṛti) but further still to the Dharmasūtra of Āpastamba which modern research would date between 600 and 300 BC. In Ireland, however, perhaps even before the coming of Christianity, certainly before the native law-books received their definitive shape, primi- tive belief in the magical powers of a fast unto death had faded sufficiently to allow the procedure to be conventionalized by the jurists into a ritual hunger strike from dusk to dawn outside the abode of the exalted 'debtor' who was however himself still bound to undertake a similar fast unless and until he offered food to his lowly 'creditor' and a pledge to satisfy the claim or submit the dispute to arbitration. But when, in the wake of Christianity, fasting as an exercise in ascetic and penitential discipline was introduced into Ireland, confusion between the two institutions was inevitable. Indeed the French Celticist Henri d'Arbois de Jubainville went so far as to state that fasting as a legal remedy was simply a by-product of the Christian practice and vigorously denied the comparison Whitley Stokes had drawn between the Irish troscad and a contemporary custom with which he had become acquainted during his long career as a higher Indian civil servant, called in modern Hindustani dharna, and recently proved to be a survival of what was known in classical Sanskrit as prāya. (cont. next page.) (cont. from prev. page) But d’Arbois had overlooked one vital piece of linguistic evidence: a separate word was used in early Christian Irish to denote fasting as an ascetic practice — aín(e), borrowed from Latin ieiunium — which was thus sharply differentiated from the inherited word troscad, the form invariably used in the secular literature for the traditional ‘coercive’ fasting. Significantly enough, the Latin loan-word eventually dropped out of religious literature also and the native troscad became the normal term for Christian fasting, an indication that this, too, had assumed many of the features of the native custom. It eventually became not merely a form of austerity but quite frequently a means of exacting concessions from others, not excluding the Deity. The saint’s ‘fast against God’ in order to wring various concessions from Him is a well-documented feature of Irish hagiography. I begin with a border-line case, which up to quite recently I had mistakenly assumed to be an outstanding example. In Saltair na Rann, composed towards the end of the tenth century, the story of the Fall describes Adam after the expulsion from Paradise begging the River Jordan ‘to fast with him against (literally “on”) dear God’ (‘co troisced lais for Día ndil’). But this whole section is merely a rendering, in rather dreary verse, of the fourth-century Vita Adae et Euae, where the fast in the Jordan is purely penitential in character. On the other hand, as Brian Murdoch notes in his most valuable commentary on this part of the poem, the Irish poet had in mind the native custom of ‘coercive’ fasting, for he uses the old legal terminology to describe its nature. (cont. next page.) cont. from prev. A much clearer case of a 'take-over' by the pre-Christian concept is provided by the Vita Tripartita of St Patrick, composed about a century earlier. The texts in the Book of Armagh tell us no less than three times that the saint 'fasted' (ieinauit) for forty days on Cruachain Aigle (the modern Croaghpatrick), doubtless in order to reinforce the parallel with Moses which the earlier biographers are fond of drawing. But in the Tripartite Life this simple statement of Patrick's austerities, whatever doubts one may have about its historicity, is completely distorted into a prolonged troscad against God. In spite of several appcals by an angelic envoy from the Deity to 'go down from the mountain', that is, break off his fast, the saint refuses to do so until he has wrung from Him a whole series of special privileges and concessions for the Irish, which in the end are reluctantly conceded to him by a God who is content to censure him only for his 'hardness', What Kathleen Hughes tightly called 'the outrageous impudence of this bargaining'"? produces a very unedifying effect on the modern reader, but the whole legend is of ecclesiastical rather than secular provenance, as is clear from the framework of the Vita Tripartita itself, a monastic triduum of readings in preparation for the saint's feast day. It certainly proves that to mediaeval Irish auditors, clerical as well as lay, this curious mixture of pagan and Christian practice, far from being an embarrassment, was accepted as further evidence of Patrick's heroic virtue. Similar successful 'fasts against God' chronicled in the biographies of other saints like Énda of Aran and Maedóc of Ferns are doubtless modelled on this exemplar.

Charny stressed his sadness about the Karabakh war of 2020. "I am in grief along with the Armenian people at the loss in Nagorno Karabakh. I've seen what 5000 deaths feel collectively after a war. The sadness, the pain, goes on for years and years and years. Five thousand in a small population. My god!" And, he added, "I feel a deep, deep shame and anger in Israel's participation in that war, as the major supplier of arms to Azerbaijan. We have succeeded in creating some demonstrations about Israel's arms policies, some degree of demonstrations regarding the policy with Azerbaijan. From the 1948 armistice Green Line, post-1967 “security border” plans, Camp David “autonomy” maps, Oslo “interim” accords, and the Clinton Parameters, to the West Bank “security fence,” every line that began as provisional has ended in permanent dispossession. (this is me describing the map a little more) Along the border of the Yellow Line on the map are the words, “The Yellow Line splits the Gaza Strip in two,” though of course those are very unequal pieces, as show by the measurements of the yellow line, which ranges in size from 3.2km in the north, to anywhere from 3.5km to 1.5km to 6.5km in the south. It ends at the sea with a 2.5km to 2km incursion at the Egyptian border.
