Case in point; this is in reference to Jesus telling Peter that he has already been washed. My inclination has always been to suspect baptism is in view; this commentary solidified that conviction. The objection to baptism only makes sense in a context where baptism is not efficacious, only symbolic

I am slowly coming to the personal conviction that it is related in some way to confession of sin. This seems to be borne out when considering St. Augustine's remarks on John 13:9-10.
