we're (virtually) looking at among other things maps and technology and art with a class from Concordia today and so you should all read this essay from @stephencass.bsky.social because it's poignant and lovely

I just wanted to add this to the map discourse: an essay I wrote for EmpherMAL, the zine from @mediaarchaeology.bsky.social — it's about the glory days of personal cartography in the 80s; text, flip-screen, and FPS games; Discworld books; and D&D then and now (p10): archive.org/details/ephe...

also, finally, what could possibly be better than having 20 nineteen year olds check out the @mediaarchaeology.bsky.social for the first time and hear them mutter repeatedly to each other across a row of typewriters and ancient cell phones, "nice. this place is dope."

still amazed the @mediaarchaeology.bsky.social‬ now has a functioning Apple Lisa...it's really something! and a bit of writing from someone in 2007 who took some pains to write a long doc about how they were only going to write on the Lisa from that point on 💚
front view of an Apple Lisa computer from 198e. yellowing beige keyboard and mouse. front panel of monitor has been removed. CRT screen shows a page of writing in Lisa Write. close up of document written in Lisa Write.file name is "Using a Lisa for real work 3/30/07." includes a graphic that's an outline of the front of an Apple Lisa with "LisaWrite" appearing in the center of the screen. photograph (taken from the top of the machine) of the insides of the Apple Lisa.

we are shifting the theme of our pop-up space on campus to "Media Before Media". it'll include artifacts from the long history of A.I. (automatons! early chat-bots!) plus 19th century optical toys, magic lanterns, wire recorders, etc. we're putting on a little fundraiser to help us purchase 1/2
