But this may be helpful. Alexander the Minorite writing c. 1240 retells the story as part of his commentary on Revelation. It gets illustrated in one of the manuscripts -- Cambridge MS MM.5.31, fol. 80v. Heraclius is killing him here. You can see the space setting.

What kind of business establishment would you guess has this in its front window? Take your best shot.

London this morning, looking more and more to me like Mordor. Probably speaks to the evolution of my relationship with the city.

It is possible these days to book an early morning tour with the National Trust and actually step into the stone circle, which is kind of magical

This bland residential building from 1939, perhaps the 1st such modernist structure in Hampstead, is held by the National Trust. Hampstead resident Ian Fleming hated it so much that he named a Bond villain after the architect, Ernö Goldfinger.

Joe Ely had the most successful (and prolific) career of any of the Flatlanders. I'd recommend two of his 1990s albums in particular: Letter to Laredo and Twistin' in the Wind. It's the kind of music Springsteen would have made if he had grown up in Lubbock.

The Flatlanders were a band led by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock. Their material was impossible to find until Rounder Records, God bless 'em, released the collection "More a Legend than a Band." Hearing this album for the first time shook my world.

Last photo ever to be posted from one of my morning walks through Regent’s Park. The golden leaves of the tree struck me as especially beautiful against the heavy gray skies. Coming soon … Hampstead Heath

For those of you keeping track of my work (I know you're out there ...), the last couple of weeks I revised chapters 1-27 and have written drafts of chapters 31 & 32. Ascalon has fallen. Crusader Jerusalem is at the height of its powers. What could go wrong?
