I’m assuming that’s a blind spot of Sam’s, and he meant to be complimentary, but there is a long, long history in the US of people downplaying Black achievements by focusing solely on their “technical” proficiency. Rubbed me the wrong way.

Good lord, there’s been so much written about that film by Black critics—if you’re struggling to see “depth” go read up. It’s worth it. You may or may not think Sinners speaks to you but Coogler put a great deal of thought into it.
