In your second example the scope is similar. I don't see many advantages besides a clean abstraction.

If you think that people don't know of their existence, you could argue that their usage might not be obvious in deeply nested code or is otherwise confusing.

How could it be a browser API? It sounds like something fundamentally done on a server. Or what do you mean with image optimization?

From a utilitarian point of view it may be more beneficial for the user to have a subscription model as it forces them to actually use the subscription to avoid waste, instead of shelving it for the time being. Though this is speculation.

For selling courses to employees directly it may be good to have 1 charge so they may reimburse cost once. Companies might like a subscription to give employees access and let rest be self-service, but I can only see this work with lots of content.
Individuals probably prefer 1 charge as well.

It is not necessarily always better to use fonts. If the character is not common, the browser may spend a long time looking for a fallback.
