I love when people say what I've been thinking better than me.

Oceanside Theatre Company's performance of John Leguizamo's "Latin History for Morons" may be even funnier than the Netflix version. Find out why - www.theworldsmyclassroom.com/post/laugh-o...
Laugh Out Loud "Latin History for Morons"
When I first saw Latin History for Morons on Oceanside Theatre Company’s (OTC) 2025 season plans I was thrilled. Finally, a play that will reach out to San Diego’s North County Latinx community that I...

Widening the Lens in "Obasan" by Joy Kogawa
An intricately beautiful and compelling novel, Obasan begins with the death of the narrator Naomi Nakane’s Uncle. As an adult, Naomi had tried hard to separate herself from her childhood experience in...

I don't drink alone.
And I don't drink on Tuesdays.
And I certainly don't wander into random bars while my kid is at soccer practice and I have teenagers to teach in the morning.
This is not me.
But I did bring a book.
THAT is me.
And turns out I was not drinking alone, I was drinking with art.

On the freeway
Clothes strewn across lanes
Awake ghosts from a news article.
Two children, passengers in van and life to a mother
high as a kite.
She screams at them
to fetch the suitcases.
Jammed between her violence and speeding vehicles
they stepped in front of the cars.
Tears too late.

Reading "Farewell to Manzanar"
Reading today's headlines -
Illegal immigrant to some.
Wrongfully deported Maryland man to others.
Husband. Human.
One of hundreds - not merely deported
But imprisoned.
Like the Japanese in World War II for an unspecified time.
For unspecified crimes.
Powerless.

Reflecting on "Farewell to Manzanar"
Comparing those times to these.
Internment camps were not concentration camps
But they still ended in death for many.
Lack of sanitation without access to healthcare.
Maternal deaths that were preventable - there inevitable. Fathers became tragic heroes.
Stuck.

Teaching "Farewell to Manzanar"
The year that Trump reawakens the Alien Enemies Act
Mere months after the author's death.
The final writing prompt "Manzanar did not happen in a bubble..."
The takeaway that this is the America we created.
Fear-mongering, othering, seeking a common scapegoat.
Blame.

On the first day of school
the young Chinese student announced
"I hate the Japanese"
citing the Rape of Nanjing.
He was not taught of Tiananmen Square or the Cultural Revolution.
Nor was I.
When you are 12 and 13 and 14,
you know everything.
We started with "Farewell to Manzanar" and went from there

Love this. Just sent a book. Hope you will too!
last year @nobordersbooks.bsky.social sent 600+ books to Rikers; this year our book drive is for teens who are incarcerated in Brooklyn. please purchase a book if you can—most of these are requested titles, and a $7 Goosebumps book would mean A LOT to a kid in detention bookshop.org/wishlists/70...

What if instead of
making the U.S.
an undesirable place to live, frighteningly devoid
of due process,
we exported the American Dream,
the jobs and factories,
the tech hubs, and infrastructure,
the democracy, and wealth
to tropical countries,
so that home could mean safety
and I could visit.

When the world gets too dark,
Dream of far horizons
Of life 150 light years away.

When the world gets too heavy,
Dream of friendships
Stretching across galaxies

When the world gets too much,
Dream of escape?
No, dream up this world as a better place.

Welcoming.

Astronomers Detect a Signature of Life on a Distant Planet
Further studies are needed to determine whether K2-18b, which orbits a star 120 light-years away, is inhabited, or even habitable.

Goalie Stats
"What is the goalie doing?"
A mom on the sidelines queries.
Forgetting the ball had to get past her son and 9 others on the team to get to mine.
I start tracking stats.
42 times the other team shoots on target.
42 times they swept past others.
27 shots stopped.
64% success
BRAVO son

My day begins with a 7th grader declaring THIS IS STUPID!
I will never use this again in my life!
When I have him note the author's use of repetition.
An interlude passes
before I explain that if one does not understand how language is used to manipulate,
then one will be manipulated by language.

Appeasement and ‘Peace for Our Time’
Concessions in diplomatic negotiations were nothing new, but after Munich, appeasement took on a new meaning.
