Today a new article examining banning of commercial sunbeds in the UK has been published by the BMJ.

The Government is currently developing a 10- year Cancer Plan & at Melanoma Focus we are calling for action to tackle sunbed use to be taken.

Up to around 40% of UV rays can still pass through clouds, even on cooler, grey days.☁️

As we head into autumn, don’t forget: if the UV index is 3 or above (usually March–October in the UK), we recommend protecting your skin with sunscreen.

During 2010, Leigh was diagnosed with stage 3A melanoma, 7 years later scans showed that the melanoma had spread within her body. She has now been off treatment for 3 years & is doing well.

In 1975 only 1,800 people were diagnosed in the UK, whereas it is now predicted (by Cancer Research UK) there will be 21,300 cases of melanoma this year. It is therefore vital that steps are taken through the Cancer Plan to prevent melanoma by reducing excessive UV exposure.

However, focusing on survival alone shows a partial picture. Unfortunately over the same time period there has been a huge rise in the number and incidence of people being diagnosed with melanoma.
