I love your described intent to write “writerly things”. It makes me ponder what types of things are writerly and what types of things are not at all writerly.
Is it annoying that we are searching for answers or annoying that everything starts with ‘how’? If it’s the latter, we could brainstorm alternative words. But I can’t think of any. How to… ??

I’m working on a non-fiction book and used the index card method (well, post-it notes) to identify topics for each chapter. I agree with your observation that this nonlinear approach is good- I could move them around and they weren’t stuck in a fixed order
