Story goes that a customer complained that their fried potatoes were too thick and sent them back to the kitchen. Crum made thinner potato slices and the new, thin, fried potato crisps were an instant hit! Crum never patented his invention, but he still gave us the world’s best use of a potato!

Today’s African-American inventor is responsible for what is, quite possibly, the best snack in the world. George Crum, a chef and restaurateur, is credited with inventing the potato chip!

Today’s African-American inventor is Garrett Morgan who patented the traffic signal in 1922. He is also credited with inventing a “breathing device” which was an early version of a gas mask. Green means go!

Did you know that Thomas L. Jennings was the first African-American to be awarded a patent in the U.S. for his process of cleaning delicate clothing called “dry-scouring,” and, presto, dry cleaning was born!
