Today was the first day of #TourDeFleece , so there will be more spinning content for the next few weeks. I started off by attending the @darnknitanyway.bsky.social kickoff, and I spun fiber from @getbentzfarm.bsky.social , @mellyknits.bsky.social , and a blend I carded. #Handspinning 🧶
A Daedalus Martin flyer and bobbin with fine grey singles (a naturally colored Cheviot). I intend to use the yarn for a 3-ply sock yarn. I was struggling with getting the tension right, so there are quite a few pigtails. A split image divided down the center vertically. On the left are strips of carded batts. I used a grey Finn, peduncle silk, some Lincoln dued green, green and teal dyed mulberry silk, and some mostly green sari silk waste. On the right is a wooden bobbin on with some spun singles. It looks more green spun up than in the fiber. A split image divided in half vertically. Before and after spinning day 1 of the 2024 Mellyknits True North adventure. On the left is a strip of carded fiber, rolled into a nest. It’s a blend of black wool (a Polypay/Rambouillet cross) and alpaca. There’s also a lock of the black wool. On the right is the spun single. It has been spun on an antique spinning wheel. A split image divided in half vertically. Before and after spinning day 2 of the 2024 Mellyknits True North adventure. On the left is a strip of carded fiber, rolled into a nest. It’s a blend of white wool (BFL/Dorset/Clun Forest cross) and alpaca. There’s also a lock of the white wool. The alpaca must have had some red to it (I need to rewatch her videos explaining it). On the right is the spun single. It has been spun on an antique spinning wheel. It looks more grey spun up than in the fiber.

#SundaysAreForSpinning : I finished some yarn spun from @mellyknits.bsky.social batts, started a new spin for socks, and finished picking a grey Finn fleece. #Handspinning
3 skeins of handspun yarn. One is a mini skein. The yarn is 3-ply and sport weight. There is a slight gold tint to it, from the 15% baby camel and 5% muga silk blended with white Corriedale. Some hand dyed spinning fiber. It is a blend of Targhee, bamboo, and silk. The fiber is arranged in a spiral. The center is yellow, then blue and dark green. A spinning project in progress. It is a single spun fairly finely on a wooden WooLee Winder bobbin. The current color is blue, but some bits of yellow are poking through underneath. A plastic bin full of loose grey wool. It is a Finn fleece that has been picked open in preparation for carding.

I’ve been combo drafting the @bramble_ridge “Winter is For the Birds” box I got last year. There are 16 colours over a variety of bases. I’m closing my eyes and picking two braids at random to draft together for the singles, then doing a 2 ply. This is how the fourth one went

#SundaysAreForSpinning: I plied the first bobbin of a blend from @mellyknits.bsky.social , carded up a kit from @getbentzfarm.bsky.social , and picked open some Finn fleece. Oh, and I ran a 5k trail run, with a free beer at the finish line.
At the top is one bobbin of 2-ply yarn, with 3 storage bobbins with singles below it. The yarn is a blend of white Corriedale, baby camel, and muga silk. The camel and silk add a slight golden sheen Two carded batts. The blend is mostly white Rambouillet. There are speckles of color courtesy sari silk and dyed silk boils. A touch of Firestar was included in the blend, but the resulting sparkle is not visible in the photo. A plastic tote filled with grey Finn fleece that has been picked open. It is mostly a Darcy charcoal color. A white woman in glasses and a visor cap holding a beer in front of the finish line of a race.

#SundaysAreForSpinning : showing off my two latest skeins, before and after washing. Both are the same CVM from @plaidperchfarm.bsky.social , one from drum carded batts and one from hand-combed top. Newest project is a Corriedale/camel/muga blend from @mellyknits.bsky.social . #Handspinning
Two skeins of 2-ply handspun yarn using the same fiber, wheels, and ratios. The one on the left, which is a lighter brown, was spun from a woolen prep. The one on the right, which looks like it has more grey mixed in with the brown, was spun from a worsted prep. The same two skeins after washing. They have puffed up a bit since before their bath. A spinning project in progress. On the bottom left are two washed Corriedale locks. They are white, 6+ inches long, and have a lovely fine crimp. The shepherd (Marble Peaks Ranch) no longer raises sheep. The bottom right shows part of a drum-carded batt which has 80% of the Corriedale blended with 15% baby camel and 5% muga silk. The add-ins tinge the batt slightly golden. Along the top are 3 plastic storage bobbins with spun singles.

February Sommelier Fibre Clubs ✨ Origins (teal), Blossom (purple), Guts 1 (pink) and Guts 3 (brown).

Colour was on my mind in Feb, maybe because it was so grey outside? Blossom and Guts 3 are the Chaos clubs so they are always cheery and I took Origins and Guts along for the ride 🍭
