Were the 80s the golden era of music? A 2021 Ipsos survey revealed that 40 % of Americans feel the 1980s produced the best music. Was it a decade that defined pop, or was it just a period of time that defined me? What makes us love some music more than others?

The great Clarence Clemons would have turned 83 today.

In his eulogy, Springsteen wrote: “Together, we told an older, richer story about the possibilities of friendship that transcended those I’d written in my songs .. he made me feel, and think, and love, and dream big.”

1979 - Sister Sledge - We Are Family
22 January 1979
The definitive disco LP - with Lost in Music being my top single of the era. As the genre was to be forced out of fashion, Nile Rodgers secured his place in history - becoming one of the defining producers of the 80s.

1978 - Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
2 June 1978
Overlooked until I understood it is a masterpiece. A chapter, with Nebraska & Born in the USA, that gave us the Boss. Observing the shadows of the promised land, sadness in stories of hope.

1977 - Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
4 February 1977
There’s a reason why everyone has a copy of this album. Flawless despite, or possibly as a result of, being made in the midst of the group’s emotional turmoil. Their 11th album - greatness can take time.

1976 - David Bowie - Station to Station
23 January 1976
In a year dominated by his school pal Peter Frampton, Bowie casually offered a six track LP that would bridge to his Berlin era. The introduction to the Thin White Duke, a transition from glam to genius.

1975 - Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
25 August 1975
Six months to record the title track - perfectionism giving us a big, lush record, and the first taste of success that would set the stage for him to emerge as one of America’s greatest troubadours.

1974 - Bowie - Diamond Dogs
24 May 1974
The end of the glam rock era for Bowie, yet influencing every Britpop band in my future. Rebel Rebel was a feature of my DJ sets through my whole career - the infectious repeated riff a call for us all to be hot tramps.

For the 70s I am choosing one record per year - but onwards I will need to have two LPs - it becomes too difficult to discern when new genres start to develop and the volume of great music increases. I’m sure people will have their own favorites and I’d love to hear which - and why!
