In addition to the hypocrisy, "thoughts and prayers" is such a lazy and hackneyed response to tragedy (often from those who probably never pray) that it has become meaningless. It screams "I must feign concern, but I can't be bothered to think out something genuinely empathetic to say".

In a nutshell, religious belief requires faith, while science requires proof.
