TBF that’s my O/Hs bike and I suspect she knocked the light when locking the bike up at the gym!
For winter I have a dynamo light on the fork crown and a ‘pothole’ light like shown in the photo.

This is it. It’s the interest free loan that makes it useful, a few £ tax is nice, but that’s all.

No light is unbearably bright if it is designed well (stVO) and/or positioned well.
My commute is 10% seaside town, 80% Somerset levels, 10% coastal road.

Really?
You have a choice. Son Edelux lights and dynamo, or reliable rechargeables.
Exposure Toro eg circa £300 that’s one front light. I still use one bought on the scheme in 2012

A suitable commute bike. £3300 before lights
November 13, 2025 at 9:19 AM
So you want to add criteria related to the length of the commute?
But no. My cycle commute is 36 miles per day. ‘Normal’ gears, brakes, etc will last 3 years tops.
A Rohloff hub and carbon belt will last longer but will be outside a scheme with a £1000 cap. A long way outside.
Lights cost £600

No I’m not.

I’m against capping the scheme

Income tax isn’t all tax.

Culture war?
November 13, 2025 at 8:48 AM
It limits the ability of both to buy a bike that may be better suited to 3 or 4 years of commuting.
The aim of the scheme.
November 13, 2025 at 8:44 AM
It really isn’t is it!?
November 13, 2025 at 8:33 AM
Right. And what does that have to do with the level of tax applied?
November 13, 2025 at 8:32 AM
You understand that I, a basic rate tax payer, will also be losing the scheme. Right!?
November 13, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Higher rate tax payers using this scheme to avoid paying a few hundred £ tax is definitely a massive problem…
