Something about Netflix promoting the 25th anniversary of Gilmore Girls while The CW does nothing makes me especially sad (even if, yes, the CW is also not where it premiered).

Taylor Swift is no stranger to clapbacks and callouts, but with #TheLifeOfAShowgirl they Hit Different given the unavoidable fact she's now Bigger Than The Whole Sky.

It wasn’t intended, but bookending my weekend with #GoodBoy and #Twinless ended up being thematically apt.

I’d swear that that #SNL Jeopardy sketch was engagement bait if they had a way to monetize me yelling at the screen.

I mean, given that the technical seems to barely matter anymore, they should definitely experiment more. (I do realize this week it did seem to matter, but it’s clear that being top in the technical won’t save you from bad signatures/showstoppers).

I question a number of her choices on this record, but folks fixating on this one is Telling On One’s Self, I think.

In the Listening Party, her introduction to the song is her basically being like “this is a song about superstitions, like knocking on wood, black cats, all that” followed by a long pause.

Which is honestly a weird introduction to the clean version of the song, so: she knows.

Y’all, it is okay to think the “Wood” song is funny. She knows it’s funny! She’s very smart!

Fun fact: this “eligibility” list is not actually subjective in any way, as per the Globes “the list was determined by the Globes data partner, Luminate, the entertainment industry’s leading authority on audio analytics and insights.”

As someone who has been accused of not really caring about Taylor Swift’s lyrics, this was an…auspicious album in which to experience it for the first time through lyric videos.

Seated with the plebes who also didn’t think a $5 upcharge for Dolby was necessary. (I have not listened to the album yet, FWIW)

It's a newsletter crossover with @memles.bsky.social, where we get wonky about where certain genres fit in TV criticism circa 2025. At What's Alan Watching?, we talk about procedurals. At Episodic Medium, we talk reality TV: www.episodicmedium.tv/week-to-week...

And over at What's Alan Watching, we explore the place of the procedural within the critical conversation as Episodic Medium prepares to wade into the genre (properly, I contend Poker Face doesn't count) with ElsLock this fall (cc: @mousterpiece.bsky.social).

It's been 15 years since @sepinwall.bsky.social's Blogspot days, so when we decided on a collaborative newsletter, I proposed a reflection on genres that have largely left his beat since.

At Episodic Medium, we talk reality TV, and whether the world needs Alan's analysis of Blake Lewis beatboxing.
