If you're an American interested in understanding the mood in Canada, this is an excellent, well-written piece (paywall).

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

The CEO of Enbridge believes that Canada's climate regs cause more uncertainty than the collapse of the rule of law and the rise of gangster capitalism in the US.

The values of some of our corporate leaders are going to destroy us.

Political staffer pro tip to help contextualize the news of the day

First ministers get more letters from citizens about cetaceans in captivity than any other issue.

I hope the Yankees win tonight! Go Yankees!!

Tomorrow I don't care who wins, as long as the game goes 16 innings.

Rewatching “A Face in the Crowd” for the first time in 40 years for no reason in particular.

Elia Kazan’s life and career seem to be quite relevant again.

I support appointing expert committees and advisory groups. They are an essential part of many policy processes. Particularly on something like this where the government has little expertise.

I hope the federal government is seized with these risks.

The make-up of the advisory committee does not give me hope. Some good people, but heavily tilted away from a realistic confrontation with the risks we face.

I hope I'm wrong.

This is spot on. Our capitulation to the ‘inevitability’ of AI couldn’t come at a worse time.

It is indeed useful!

Fatalism is my emotional posture, but I guess helpful advice is also a choice one can make.

Silicon Valley’s alliance with Donald Trump was a mask off moment and showed the world we can’t depend on US tech companies.

For the past few months, I’ve been trying to get off US tech and I put together a guide so you find alternatives too. I hope you find it helpful!
Getting off US tech: a guide
I’m in the process of dropping US tech services. Here’s how I did it, and options you should consider.

I spent the week at the police surveillance convention and let me tell you my biggest observation: The name of the game now is consolidating as much information as humanely possible from surveillance devices, the internet, other governmental data, and literally a million other places. 🧵

#Elbowsup has to be more than a slogan. We need to start saying no to predators.

Canadians don't have to say "more please" to things that will clearly leave us more vulnerable and less sovereign.

The Parkland (🍁) sale to Sunoco (🗽) offers little benefit to Canada while risking jobs, innovation and sovereignty.

Ottawa should say no.

Why do economists care about inequality in incomes and wealth?

1) Inequality tends to dampen overall economic performance. One of most immediacy effects is on consumer spending. Low-and middle-income households spend a larger percentage of each dollar that they earn when more spending is in…

pro tip: you can’t claim the entire security & economic partnership is over and then willingly hand over all sorts of info sans warrant to the US

“People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, and your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: vaporized was the usual word.“

According to data provided by Statscan to the OECD, Canada's tertiary education system is experiencing BY FAR the fastest public disinvestment of any country in the developed world. (I am not sure the specific figures are 100% accurate, but the conclusion is still irrefutable)
